for they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded, 52 because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.
There is a warning for the Christ follower within this passage. It is a mistake to think that we are doing fine because we have a relationship with Christ or even that we are practicing regular "Christian activities". The disciples were with Jesus and yet they are described as having hard hearts.
How did they get hard hearts? And if we have a hard heart what do we do about it? They had hard hearts because they did not take full advantage of being with Jesus. They didn't understand what Jesus was doing. They didn't recognize His sovereignty and His plan and purpose. We also struggle with those same things. Are hearts become hard because we forget that Jesus is sovereign and we forget what His purpose is for our lives. What is the cure of hard heartedness? It is to recognize Jesus is with us in the struggle and to recommit ourselves to trusting Him in the midst of our crisis. When we do He speaks into our hearts what He spoke to the disciples, "have courage. It is I! Don't be afraid."
Lets be honest we all have times of hard heartedness. Trust Him and follow Him. He will see you through.
